Livingstone, home of our group
Share
Livingstone is the tourist capital of Zambia and home to the "Tubombele Pamo" group. This small city of around 140.000 inhabitants was called that way due to the british explorer David Livingstone. Most of its citizens come from the Tonga tribe, one of the main ones in Zambia, and that is why one of our collections has its name.
The Maramba Market, which is where our group gets the materials to do the bags, is a pace full of life and where you can find almost anything. Another very recommendable market is the Dambwa one, which is one of the main ones in the city.
Laying southwest of the city is the Zambezi river, where one can find an endless amount of fauna including hippos, crocodiles and elephants. Throughout the river we can also find a lot of resorts and restaurants where you can enjoy the peace from this wonderful area.
In the border with Zimbabwe, in the south, is where the astonishing Victoria Falls are found. They are locally known as Mosi oa Tunya ("smoke that thunders"), the biggest waterfall in Africa.
The city is ideal for those who love adventures and adrenaline, as you have the opportunity of doing some rafting in the Zambezi river, with some amazing waves depending on the time of the year, and also bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, where one can jump having one of the most amazing views in the world.
Doing a safari in the Mosi oa Tunya National Park gives you the opportunity of seeing the rare white rhinos a few meters away, while going on a boat cruise over the Zambezi river at sunset is another great activity that one can do in the area.
For those who prefer knowing how the locals live, the Mukuni village, next to the Victoria Falls, is an excellent idea. This is due to the fact that it is more isolated from the city and not being as used to tourism, so it maintains better its charm.
For the food lovers, one of the main dishes which is considered a must when you visit the country is the nshima, a maize porridge which accompanies every dish consisting on vegetables, chicken or fish. This dish is one of the best known ones in most of Africa, but with other names, including: Pap (South Africa), Xima (Mozambique), Ugali (Kenya/East Africa)... Have it with vishashi (vegetables cooked with peanut sauce) or if you are feeling adventurous try some Mopane worms (cooked worms) and do not forget to use the hands to enjoy a typical Zambian experience.
